WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL RELEASE?

Myofascial release (or trigger point therapy) is a massage technique that focuses on reducing muscle pain by easing tension and tightness in the trigger points of the body. This is achieved by not only focussing on the muscle ('myo') but also the surrounding and penetrating connective tissue ('fascia). 

Often where we are feeling the pain may actually be due to tightness or restriction in the surrounding joints and areas. Using these techniques we are able to reach deep into the underlying muscles and connective tissues of the body.

How does SELF Myofascial Release Work?

When we use Self Myofascial Release Techniques we use basic tools to help us reach and release the trigger-points the same way a massage therapist would. Where they might use their thumb or tip of the elbow, we use a small firm massage ball, where they might use their forearm to create broad massage strokes, we use a foam roller.  

Using these tools we apply manual pressure to the effected areas and use multiple rolling techniques to soften and release tightness and restriction.

PART 1 - TARGETED STRETCHING

The foundation of effective muscle release work is stretching. Using targeted stretching combined with self myofascial release techniques will help to create long lasting improvements in the muscle and connective tissue network of the body. 

In this module you will learn the most effective stretches, broken down by specific areas of the body.

PART 2.1 - MASSAGE BALL TECHNIQUES

10 LESSONS

During this in-depth, 2-part module we cover the various rolling techniques that can be used to massage away stubborn 'knots' that we often feel accompanied with pain and restriction. 

In these 10 guided videos you will learn how you can easily apply these techniques from home or work, without the need for expensive appointments or fancy equipment. 

We start by making our way through the various regions of the body using the massage balls to target and release the common problem areas of the body.

As you follow along with each demonstration you will gain a deeper understanding as to what every day activities can contribute to feelings of stiffness and restriction and how to release them. 

PART 2.2 - FOAM ROLLER TECHNIQUES

PART 2 CONTINUED 

Here we introduce the foam roller. This is an extremely effective and versatile tool. 

Using the foam roller we combine both stretch and myofascial release techniques to target broader areas and the larger global movers of the body. 

For the purposes of this course we use a set of firm massage balls and a foam roller, however you are also provided with examples of alternatives (if you do not have these available) that can be round in most households.

PART 3 - BREATH WORK

4 LESSONS

Breath work is such a powerful tool to manage nervous system regulation. 

During this module you will learn various breath work techniques that you can use to help down regulate your fight or flight (sympathetic) nervous system and  stimulate you rest and digest (parasympathetic) nervous system. 

Mastering these techniques can help to reduce over all stress and anxiety and allow you to feel more relaxed and productive with your time.

Lower Back Stretch

Utilising my qualifications in sport and exercise science, for the first 5 years of my career in fitness I focused predominantly on movement, I teach Mat and Reformer Pilates as well as Barre and other group fitness. However I always felt there was something missing. In recent years I have shifted focus to learning and practicing different manual therapies including Myofascial Release and Assisted Stretch Therapy with the aim of learning how to [P]rehab the body.
